Cardiac Surgeon

17 years experience

I presently head the Cardiac Surgery Department at B P Poddar Hospital and Medical Research, Kolkata. We mostly do adult cardiac surgery averaging about 25 per month. Strict enforcement ofSOPs and vigilant patient care has helped us achieve an impressive average mortality of less than0. 8%. At my previous appointment, I used to work as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, at Medica SuperspecialityHospital, Kolkata. Our department has a monthly caseload of about 100 Hearts. I routinely do OPCABsalong with a fairly good number of Ischaemic Mistrals. I also do Hemi sternotomy AVR and Mini Mitralalong with some single/be leaflet Mitral repairs. My other surgical endeavor included LV volumerestoration and surgery of the Aortic Root. I worked as Fellow, Cardiothoracic at The Royal Perth Hospital(RPH). RPH is the tertiary referral centerfor Cardiothoracic surgery in the state of Western Australia and the only hospital in the state for AdvancedLife support and Heart-Lung Transplantation. RPH is also the referral hospital for Trans Aortic ValveReplacements. Here, at RPH I had the opportunity to train myself in the enlisting, insertion andmanagement of patients with LVAD (Heartware and Heartmate II). I also gained experience in Heart-LungTransplantation. Among the other routine surgeries I acquired skills in Mitral Valve Repairs and Aortic Surgery includingRoot and Arch replacements. I also had a chance to brush up my skills in Thoracic surgery includinglobectomies, decortication, and VATS. After Completion of my higher surgical training, MCh(CVTS) I joined Rabindranath Tagore InternationalInstitute of Cardiac Sciences(RTIICS), Kolkata as Junior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery. RTIICS isspecialized center for cardiac care with an annual surgical volume of about 2500 hearts including both adultand pediatric cases. Here I had supervised surgical training in advanced adult cardiac surgery along withopportunity to do cases independently. I was working there till I joined as Fellow, Cardiothoracic Surgeryat Royal Perth Hospital in August 2012. At RTIICS, I was mainly involved in adult cardiac surgery and usually performed 1-2 cardiac surgerieseveryday independently. These included coronary artery bypass grafting (both on pump and off pump), valves and combined procedures. RTIICS is an accredited training institute for cardiac surgery by National Board of Examinations, NewDelhi, India. I was involved with supervision and training of new trainees. ACHIEVEMENTS:Managed to set new standards of efficiency in Perioperative care by ensuring most routine Cardiac surgerypatients get discharged on day 3. Ensured rigorous quality control by maintaining and auditing our clinical data. Made myself abreast with the latest developments in Cardiac Surgery including implantation of LVADS and Transcatheter Valves. You can get the phone number of Dr. Saptarshi Roy on Timesmed. com.
